Volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it’s about growing forward. For today’s youth, volunteering with a nonprofit organization offers much more than service hours. It opens doors to personal development, academic success, social awareness, and career readiness. As organizations like My Neighbors Keeper Alliance Inc. (MyNKA) open their arms to student volunteers, we’re witnessing how meaningful service can shape young leaders and create lifelong changemakers.
1. Build Leadership & Life Skills

Youth volunteers often take on roles that challenge them to think critically, solve problems, and take initiative. Whether it’s helping coordinate a mental health fair or assisting during a community workshop, they’re learning real-world skills—communication, teamwork, time management, and responsibility—that are essential for adulthood and career success (Youth.gov, 2023).
2. Strengthen College & Career Readiness

Volunteering enhances a student’s resume and college applications. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, students who volunteer are 19% more likely to graduate from college. Nonprofit service also provides exposure to professional environments and mentorship that may guide career interests in healthcare, social work, education, and advocacy.
3. Boost Mental Health & Self-Esteem

Engaging in community service gives young people a sense of purpose and belonging. Numerous studies, including one from the Mayo Clinic (2020), show that volunteering reduces stress, combats depression, and increases feelings of happiness. Being a part of something larger than oneself is empowering, especially during the formative teenage years.
4. Create Social Awareness & Empathy

Nonprofit volunteering exposes youth to diverse populations and challenges. They learn empathy, compassion, and the value of community. These experiences help build socially responsible citizens who are more likely to vote, advocate, and contribute positively to society as adults (National Service Knowledge Network, 2021).
5. Earn Service Hours with Impact

For students in Maryland and especially Prince George’s County Public Schools, volunteering is a graduation requirement through the Student Service Learning (SSL) program. Organizations like MyNKA offer certified SSL opportunities that not only fulfill school criteria but allow students to engage in projects aligned with their passions—such as mental health advocacy, podcast production, or youth peer workshops.
6. Connect with Mentors and Peers

Volunteering brings students into contact with adults who can serve as role models and mentors. It also helps youth build strong peer connections through shared service experiences. These relationships can have lasting positive effects on their confidence and social development.
7. Cultivate a Lifelong Spirit of Service

Research shows that people who volunteer as youth are more likely to volunteer as adults. Early exposure to community service helps foster a long-term commitment to giving back—a trait that benefits both individuals and the society they live in (Journal of Adolescence, 2018).
Join the Movement with EYAME
At My Neighbors Keeper Alliance, our yearlong EYAME program (Empowering Youth through Awareness, Mentorship and Education) offers student volunteers the opportunity to earn SSL hours while engaging in impactful, skill-building activities like:
- Planning events and workshops
- Serving as summer camp assistants
- Creating educational social media content
- Participating in youth leadership and advocacy training
We believe in developing the next generation of change agents. If you’re a student—or a parent of one—interested in combining service with purpose, we welcome you to be a part of something transformative.
